Inclusive engineering: How do we solve this mission critical challenge?
The Aerospace and Defence industry has its unique challenges when it comes to inclusivity, equity and diversity. For example, women make up less than 10% of the engineering workforce in the Aerospace and Defence industry, compared with 15.7% of engineering as a whole. The challenge only gets bigger when we consider intersectionalities, and the public and societal perception of the Aerospace and Defence sector. In this webinar, we will discuss these challenges with those in the industry and hear their thoughts on how we can tackle these challenges in 2024 and beyond.

Laura Hoang is a Human Factors Engineer with a systems engineering background. She is an award-winning Chartered Engineer, and has had a very varied career - from designing cockpits to safety systems for the sustainable energy sector, and now works as a Senior Human Factors Consultant at amentum.
She is a trustee and co-chair of SheCanEngineer, and also a trustee for another charity called Epistemic, whose goal is to make STEM careers advice more accessible. Laura is a STEM Ambassador and also mentors engineers, supporting them with their professional registration and other development goals. In her spare time, she volunteers for a local charity who aim to tackle loneliness in the elderly community.
Nintse Dan-The is a Senior Systems Engineer at Northrop Grumman UK within its defence maritime subsidiary, supporting project teams by producing critical project deliverables for design reviews and ensuring the correct application of Systems Engineering fundamentals, such as the correct management of technical and stakeholder requirements, across project lifecycles.
She is also a member of the WISE Young Professionals Board (WYPB), Deputy Chair of the International Council of Systems Engineers UK (INCOSE UK) Early Careers Forum, and Co-Chair of Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage (REACH) ERG at NGUK. Between her intra and extra-vocational responsibilities, Nintse regularly engages in outreach programmes, and finds great joy in being able to motivate those around her to always be their best selves and excel in their careers.
Joshua Thomson-Smith is a Trustee of the IMechE working to elevate the young member voice, champion D&I committee work across the Institution and pull together the international young members as part of realising our 2030 strategy. He also was the creator of the IMechE Talking Together series that explores the universal issue of mental health and wellbeing across the industry.
Joshua works as a Chartered Engineer and change specialist at Rolls-Royce. He is a Digital Lead in Engineering, Technology and Safety as part of the Test & Experimental function working across multiple global business areas. Joshua is passionate about ensuring Rolls-Royce uses the most advanced digital solutions to execute world class Engineering programmes
Lucy Davies is a Technical Manager in Sustainable Air Platforms at BAE Systems. Having graduated from Loughborough University in 2021 with a Masters’ Degree in Aeronautical Engineering, she joined the BAE Systems Graduate Scheme and has been selected for their Future Talent Programme. Lucy gained her Incorporated Engineer Status with the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2023, and sits on the Society’s Women in Aviation, Aerospace and Space Committee.
Lucy is a staunch advocate for women in engineering and sits on the WISE Young Professionals’ Board. With her peers on the Board Lucy has launched a podcast called ‘Unfiltered STEM’ with the purpose of breaking down stereotypes and forming a network of women within STEM.
